Yet another rite of passage for 90s indie bands was the Radio 1 session. Steve Lamacq was well known for his ever-presence at sweaty small venues all over London. Steve first saw Coldplay at The Barfly in Camden. From that one show, he invited them to play a session on his radio show. (Making them the first unsigned band to ever play a Lamacq Live session.) His championing of the band continued as does their friendship to this day.

Another long-time Coldplay friend is also present here. The comedy piano playing in the background during the interview is none other than director Mat Whitecross. Mat went on to make the band’s first video and many videos since. (Notably the much-loved Paradise and Sky Full Of Stars videos.)

The relationships with both these gents can be traced all throughout the timeline. They’re nothing if not loyal!
