The band make their television debut on BBC's Later… with Jools Holland
06 May 2000
note
The band’s first ever television appearance. Jools Holland is a huge figure in British music television. His “Later With..” show has run since 1992 and is known for putting on both brand new talent and legends from throughout music history.
Something of a nerve wracking affair, the show bases itself entirely on live performance, with no lip-syncing and no gimmicks. This would be fine, of course, but each episode puts half a dozen artists in a circle, all playing in front of each other. Not only are bands playing to a studio and television audience, but also to a room full of other musicians – often the most intimidating audience there is.
It puts everyone under the microscope and that pressure has yielded some stunning performances over the years.
The band have, of course, been back on the show with every album. But my guess would be the nerves and the excitement of their first time were never topped.
