Our tour manager, Jeff Dray, dropped us off at the wrong site entrance 10 minutes before we were due on stage.

A mere 18 months after their first ever show, Coldplay were booked to play Glastonbury. The main stage was still some way off at this point and fittingly, their appearance was in the New Bands Tent. This story about the fellas’ steadfast refusal to allow a potentially gig-ending problem to beat them has always seemed to me to be an early illustration of the sheer willpower that helped them get where they are. Bands with lesser gumption would have laughed in the pub for years about ‘the time we nearly played Glastonbury’. Coldplay, however, had a job to do.
Other artists on the New Bands Tent that year included Muse and David Gray. Main stage headliners were REM, the Manic Street Preachers and Skunk Anansie.
