For a period of time, the UK music press talked about the “new acoustic movement”. Coldplay’s style at this time meant they were included in this. Other bands amongst the pack were Damien Rice, Turin Brakes, David Gray and Keane, amongst others.

This four track EP – which has since become something of a collector’s item – was given away with one of the British Sunday papers. The simplicity of the acoustic arrangements does highlight the strength and maturity of the songwriting that was evident right from the beginning. There’s not a lot of places to hide when things are stripped down this much. Luckily, they had little need.
